For NINT scientists, Alberta’s key researchers and their industry colleagues.Agriculture and Food – Nanotechnology Workshop Executive SummaryThe objectives of AARI hosting the Agriculture and Food – Nanotechnology Workshop were to create a greater awareness about the application and advancement of nanotechnology within the agriculture and food sector, to stimulate new ideas for research to align with the industry’s technology needs and to bring together the communities of researchers in agriculture and food, some of their industry collaborators and associates of the National Institute of Nanotechnology (NINT) located in Edmonton, AB.
There were 52 participants in the workshop, to listen to presentation from Dr. Rickey Yada, the Scientific Director of Applied Foods and Materials Network (AFMNet), the University of Guelph as well as Dr. Jennifer Kuzma, the Interim Director, Centre for Science, Technology and Public Policy, University of Minnesota. Rick Brommeland, Director of Business Development and External Relations also addressed the group regarding the capacity and scope of NINT.
There were a few breakout sessions at the workshop, exploring opportunities for the application of nanotechnology to address industry needs within the agriculture and food sector and brainstorming fabulous ideas where nanotechnology might address concerns. The social implication of this technology was explored, where nanotechnology could learn from previous technologies like biotech, and genetically modified organisms.
In the end, there was a greater awareness of nanotechnology within the research community that is interested and engaged in biotechnology and see nanotech as a means of advancing their research.
